If there is a team in baseball that understands the value of depth, that’s the Los Angeles Dodgers.

They bring in players to mold them to their style and focus on their strengths, and in recent seasons, they have made sure to have several alternatives ready just in case.

On Tuesday, the Dodgers announced a depth move that could potentially be important down the road.

Just when Jason Heyward was scratched from the lineup Monday against the San Francisco Giants with back stiffness, they are bringing in former top prospect Taylor Trammell.

“Dodgers have claimed outfielder Taylor Trammell off waivers, source confirms. @ByRobertMurray on it. Interesting after Jason Heyward went for imaging on his back yesterday,” Dodgers insider Fabian Ardaya tweeted.

There is a good chance the team doctor recommends an MRI and more imaging for Heyward.

The potential for Trammell to find playing time is definitely there, although it’s always difficult to crack the Dodgers’ roster and it will depend on Heyward’s evolution in all likelihood.

The veteran could be heading for imaging soon, as he is suffering from back stiffness.

Trammell has prospect pedigree, but has been unable to land a permanent gig in the majors so far.

He has been with three organizations so far: the Cincinnati Reds, the San Diego Padres, and the Seattle Mariners.

The Dodgers are his fourth.

In MLB, he has slashed a disappointing .168/.270/.368 in 351 plate appearances, with 15 home runs and four stolen bases.

His Triple-A numbers (.268/.390/.530, 21 home runs, 17 stolen bases in 85 games in 2023) suggest that the 26-year-old deserves another chance.

The Mariners had designated him for assignment on Friday, and waived him not long after that.

Perhaps the Dodgers can help him get his career back on track.
