AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man convicted of aggravated sexual assault Thursday failed to appear for the punishment phase of his trial Friday, according to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA said there was now an active warrant out for the arrest of 56-year-old Hai Vo.

According to officials, Vo was arrested in May 2020 related to a charge for a January 2020 sexual assault.

Vo’s trial began Monday, March 25, and on Thursday, the jury found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault.

The DA’s office said it requested Vo be detained after the conviction, but the request was denied.

Vo was sentenced to serve 10 years in prison related to the sexual assault conviction. It is unknown if he will face further charges related to failing to appear for the punishment phase.

“After the jury convicted Mr. Vo, our prosecutors promptly requested that he be detained, but their request was denied,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “It is disappointing that the victim and their family must continue to wait for the defendant to be held accountable after our team secured his conviction.”
